When parking and driving in tourist cities is a nightmare

Holidays are the most eagerly awaited days of the year, which is why it is important everything goes to plan. Arriving in a city and not finding somewhere to park and spending hours in the car looking for parking can spoil those longed-for days off. At the same time, residents of these cities suffer the consequences of the arrival of huge waves of tourists as they can cause more problems than benefits in some cases.

One of the first priorities of the inhabitants of a territory is freedom of movement and the need to travel, which constitutes a fundamental right of the citizen. This requirement is difficult to meet in densely populated areas as is the case in cities in general, particularly those with variations in their usual traffic volumes in a short period of time such as tourist areas.

This situation usually leads to problems such as a decline in retail sales, environmental pollution of the city generated by carbon dioxide emissions and noise pollution caused by cars. Such a context therefore becomes a nuisance for residents and traders, while also creating a poor image for visitors.

Technology for Smart Cities and the action plans implemented by city councils help alleviate these situations. Isolated cases in coastal or mountainous region municipalities or even World Heritage Sites show how it is possible to reverse this trend and once again enjoy these cities.

Tourism and heritage in the 21st century

While medieval cities were built to be inaccessible, the 21st century requires cities that are viable for traffic and the pedestrian mobility of their inhabitants and tourists. Many of the ancient cities in Spain urgently require transformation, for example Toledo, Alcalá de Henares, Salamanca, Ibiza, Tarragona, Santiago de Compostela, Segovia and Cáceres, to name but a few.

Tourist cities such as Ibiza, Alcalá de Henares y Toledo are also World Heritage Sites. In these cases The White Paper on Mobility in Heritage Cities has set a precedent on different ways of taking action to solve the problems that arise today.

The document states that the most common solution taken to make these types of roads accessible has been the building of a single platform and in many cases pedestrianisation. However, there are also other solutions applicable to these types of problems, particularly those related to vehicle traffic.

Alcalá de Henares, the responsibility of being a World Heritage Site

Alcala_2

With 206,000 residents and an additional daily floating population of around 50,000, Alcalá de Henares is a municipality located in the eastern part of the Autonomous Region of Madrid. It is strategically located in terms of communications, since it receives all the traffic flow from the N-II road and is crossed by the Madrid-Barcelona rail line.

In an automobile census in the municipality in April 2014, 84% of vehicles there belonged to the tourism sector. Given these numbers, the city council started to implement several measures to solve problems caused by the huge influx of tourists and the need to ensure both the well-being of citizens and visitors.

One of the actions included the programme to promote bicycle use in the city and the creation of a series of parking areas to facilitate pedestrian transit, helping to improve environmental sustainability and increase mobility in the city centre.

Ibiza receives two million tourists a year

Ibiza_2

Ibiza is an island in the Mediterranean forming the archipelago and autonomous region of the Balearic Islands, in Spain. It has an area of 572 km² and a population of 140,964 inhabitants (according to the 2015 population census), and receives roughly 2,000,000 tourists a year attracted by the beauty of its landscapes and its world-famous entertainment and night-life options.

Being such a popular tourist destination started to generate various problems on the island. This seasonal influx complicated access to the centre and caused congestion of vehicles looking for parking in the Marina. This situation affected the well-being of the population and had a negative impact on trade and the image of the area. As a result, the local government decided to place sensors on the parking spaces of the Marina and install a panel to inform drivers of parking space availability, therefore avoiding unnecessary vehicle access in case all the spaces were occupied. This smart parking technology is part of Urbiotica’s solutions and enables optimised management of parking areas and quicker access into the city centre.

Cities today have great disagreements concerning the use of the limited soil availability. Some cities prefer to dedicate more space to new parking areas, while others, such as Ibiza and some touristic places decided to optimise the management of the existing parking areas to make the most of them and this way reduce vehicles driving around searching for a free spot and hence reduce traffic jams.  Citizens are satisfied because they no longer waste time looking for parking, suffer less stress and have improved quality of life.

Urbiotica presents its new solution for noise control at the first AcustiCat Congress

AcustiCat, the first Catalan Congress for reducing noise pollution in the urban environment, will be held on 28 and 29 April. The event, which will be held at the Fira de Sabadell, will be attended by 70 speakers, 25 actively related entities and 200 sponsors. The congress will feature various parallel discussion and reflection activities related to the challenges and dilemmas of noise problems, and will include round tables, solutions and workshops on specific problems (technological, intangible and social). On Thursday 28 at 11.30 h, Urbiotica will provide a demonstration of the operation of the sensing system already successfully implemented in cities such as Girona.

Noise pollution has become one of the main environmental problems in today’s increasingly built-up cities. Noise caused by night-life areas, traffic, building work and roadworks is affecting the health and well-being of citizens causing stress and dissatisfaction among citizens and increasing public health costs. Governments need to continuously monitor noise pollution to raise public awareness and design and implement action plans that mitigate this problem.

Urbiotica’s proposal is to implement a noise monitoring network for the continuous monitoring in real time of city trouble spots and the use of alerts when the established limits are exceeded. This results in less nuisance and fewer citizen complaints, while also improving action plans defined for reducing noise levels.

Urbiotica’s noise monitoring system has already been introduced in the city of Girona. The project deployed jointly with the city council involved the setting up of five sensing points with traffic and night-life related noise problems. Through VisorAcustic inhabitants can access information in real time on noise in the city and those responsible for managing noise pollution receive notifications when noise limits are exceeded for immediate action, particularly necessary in night-life areas.

Our sensing system for continuous noise monitoring will be presented with a Demo at the AcustiCat Congress next Thursday 28 at 11.30h in the Fira de Sabadell.

The new Urbiotica White Paper reveals myths and truths about Smart Parking technologies

Urbiotica presents its new White Paper to offer a better perspective on the myths and truths of existing technologies aimed at improving the management and optimisation of parking areas. This document outlines the experience accumulated by the company over the past eight years, during which more than 10,000 sensors have been deployed and almost 3 million daily detections generated, sensors which are still operational in customer projects in almost twenty countries on three continents.

The emergence of technologies related to the Internet of Things has aroused great expectations for those who manage car parks. However, because the projects deployed have not always achieved their goals, some users remain doubtful about the reliability of the solutions applied. This has led to a debate on the maturity of these technologies.

The White Paper reviews current technologies for detecting vehicles and summarises the advantages and disadvantages of each of them. Urbiotica details in this document the company’s experience in implementing smart parking solutions, the technical and operational know-how developed, the difficulties we have faced and the major successes obtained and future opportunities to be offered by technological developments and market evolution.

The new White Paper describes how, from an original and patented idea, Urbiotica has built its success story.

We will present this document and other Urbiotica novelties at the upcoming Intertraffic event to be held in Amsterdam from 5 to 8 April. Intertraffic: EL.305 ELICIUM Hall.

Sète deploys Urbiotica’s sensors to improve mobility in the town

The project which was implemented in the town involved the deployment of traffic sensors at conflictive strategic points, as well as parking sensors to optimise the use of parking spaces in order to improve mobility around the town.

“When we talk about Sète, two things spring to mind: we cannot drive around easily or park”, bemoaned the deputy mayor of the town Sébastien Pacull in an interview with the French newspaper Midi Libre.

The French town of the canals is known for its curious location and geographical distribution, and its communication at various points by bridges that cross its canals. The bridges serve as the main access routes into the town and normally cause frequent traffic congestion. To change this image of the town, the mayor says they have launched an ambitious action plan to optimise and rationalise the space dedicated to vehicles, pedestrians and their flows.

The French newspaper Midi Libre stresses what is important about project is to know precisely the number of available parking spaces and to report on the traffic conditions on the bridges.

The parking systemalready works in certain regulated areas where today you can cross-reference the sensor data with the use times of the parking spaces in order to optimise and manage parking areas more efficiently. “The parking areas beneath the Canal are underused. On Saturday afternoons occupancy is only around 35% which is mainly due to the lack of information”, commented Sébastien Pacull.

Sensors have also been installed on the busiest streets to know vehicle flow and measure traffic intensity. Other sensors installed on bridges identify whether they are open or closed to vehicles.

Soon, and based on information currently provided by the sensors, a mobile application will enable drivers in Sète to know in real time the latest traffic news and parking availability in the town, as well as the traffic conditions on the bridges.

The project implemented by Citelum in collaboration with Mentis and Urbiotica was deployed quickly, efficiently and with hardly any public works necessary, resulting in major savings compared to other smart solutions.

Smart parking transforming teeming tourist cities into efficient and enjoyable places to live or visit

Some cities experience massive overcrowding during peak periods as a result of their attractiveness to tourists or for being a haven for holidaymakers.

The access to beaches, shopping and leisure areas gets blocked by cars trying to reach their destination or motorists driving around looking for a free parking spot. It creates stress and unease amongst the residents and tourists who therefore spend too much time getting around the city. The local trade notice their sales and foot traffic decreaseCO2 emissions and noise contamination caused by vehicle traffic harms residents’ health. It’s really irritating and annoying for residents and shop-owners and creates a bad image for visitors.

One of the biggest challenges of today’s Public Administration and Urban Service Management is to reduce the congestion caused by looking for parking on public roads improving the traffic flow in the city and, therefore, the environmental quality and well-being of residents. Ibiza and l’Escala are two good examples of places which were facing massive seasonal overcrowding and decided to take control of the situation by implementing smart parking solutions to become more efficient and livable places.

Ibiza: Over 2 Million tourists during summer months

L’Escala multiplies population in summer season

Parking solution solving mobililty in Nice

Parking solution solving mobility in Nice Nice is one of the most tourist areas of the Côte d’Azur and a claim for holiday visitors. Traffic was critical. The situation was causing serious traffic mobility management problems and pollution being detrimental for citizens’ well-being and quality of life. In the Smart City developed in Nice, the proposal is based on parking solutions that meet both the needs of administrations and citizens. The parking solution informs citizens of parking availability and rates in realtime as well as alternative transport options (public transport, bicycles, shared cars, etc.). This system enables the administration and city managers to apply dynamic prices to parking based on availability, traffic and even current pollution levels. Adapting prices allows them to influence traffic density, preventing saturation and greatly reducing pollution in the city.

Users check all the information on the Internet, smartphones and panels installed in the street, making it much easier to decide where to park and the best way to get around the city. The project improves the user’s experience and boosts local trade through practical information on the local area and entertainment activities or sales promotions (hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions, weather, etc.). The Nice administration recognizes the improvement in the quality of life of its citizens, thanks to the mobility and parking solution .   See it all in Nice Smart Mobility video:

Urbiotica’s on-street parking management solution The company’s on-street management solution provides Public Administrations and Urban Service Managers with the tools they need to optimize the management of this service through more productivity, vehicle occupancy and rotation increase, payment control, business revenue improvement, new value-added services, mobility improvement and the reallocation of resources to additional value-added services.
