Optimise parking and employee satisfaction 

The Audi factory located in Ingolstadt -Germany-  has a parking lot with a capacity of more than 5,000 spaces. Established in 1995 so that Audi AG suppliers could be closer to the plant and employees and visitors could leave their vehicles in the vicinity of the factory, the parking area has grown continuously since then to 830,000m².

With more than 5,000 parking spaces, a system needed to be implemented that would optimise the use of spaces and reduce vehicle congestion caused by cars looking for free spaces.

Monitor 5,000 spaces with 22 parking capacity sensors

Urbiotica’s proposal is based on the installation of 22 wireless parking capacity sensors to detect vehicles entering and leaving each parking sector, in order to communicate free spaces in each area and guide vehicles to them. Being a space with delimited entrances and exits, the guidance project could be deployed with only 22 sensors to monitor the 5,000 spaces.

Reduce the time spent looking for spaces through vehicle guidance

The wireless sensors count the number of vehicles that enter and leave each parking sector. Based on the total number of spaces defined, the occupancy data is calculated and real-time availability communicated through the digital panels located at the entry points. This helps guide drivers to areas with free spaces or to another sector in case of no availability. With the technology implemented by Urbiotica it is also possible to detect vehicles in both directions. The vehicle is detected correctly even when the driver goes the wrong way.

Employee satisfaction and time-saving

Parking in Audi is now far smoother and quicker. Thanks to the improvements introduced, congestion has disappeared and vehicle flow in the parking area is now smoother. Workers do not waste any time looking for parking and go to work more relaxed and satisfied.

In the project developed in Audi, we based our proposal on solutions that meet both the needs of company and employees.

Monitored parking spaces

Urbiotica’s guided parking solution was jointly implemented with our partner in Germany MSR- Traffic.  Their CEO Harald Schmidt explains why Urbiotica’s sensors were a key part of this project.

“We have installed Urbiotica’s wireless counting sensors and integrated their data in our parking guidance system. Our customer was looking for a solution that would allow Audi’s employees in Ingolstadt to find free parking spaces when going to work.

Since most parking areas are open spaces, the first problem we found was that we could not count vehicles like in a closed garage (with wired sensors located under the roof). The second problem was the entry and exit of the lanes as we did not have any local power source. This meant that wireless counting sensors were the best solution for this application”. “Urbiotica’s solution is also a very good system  in terms of cost effectiveness”, said Schmitt, and added, “Audi and LGI are delighted to have a dynamic parking guidance system which they are thinking about extending”.
