Solve traffic congestion in the centre of L’Escala
L’Escala is a town situated in a privileged spot on the Costa Brava. It is a major attraction for tourists and holidaymakers, making it heavily affected by seasonality.
The local government saw how in summer months the population would multiply resulting in problematic traffic congestion in the town centre, mainly caused by vehicles looking for parking. This would generate stress and effect the satisfaction of citizens and businesses in the centre, and have a negative impact on the image of the town as well.
The aim of the project that we developed for the local government was to reduce traffic congestion in the area caused by vehicles looking for parking.
L’Escala guidance project has been carried out in two phases. The success of the project installed in 2015 resulted in an extension of the system in a second phase in 2019 for which Urbiotica technology was selected again.
Urbiotica deployed U-Spot single space sensors or U-Flows counting sensors at the entrances and exits of the 4 most important car parks in the center of l’Escala. The data captured is transformed into useful information which guides customers directly to the free spaces by means of the variable message signs installed.
Seven variable message signs (VMS) were strategically placed at the accesses and the periphery of the city center, informing drivers about the occupancy of the 4 car parks.
Thanks to the information transmitted on the VMS, the vehicles are guided according to the real time availability of parking spaces, reducing unnecessary traffic flow caused by looking for parking by up to 30%.
Within the extension of the project, a fifth zone has been equipped with U-Spot sensors, as well as a VMS installed in the Riells beach area to inform users in real time with respect to the availability of parking spots.
With this second phase, the l’Escala guidance project covers a total of 732 sensorized parking spaces.
In the smart city project developed in L’Escala, we based our proposal on solutions that meet both the needs of administrations and citizens.
